Intercoder reliability software for qualitative coding teams

Short answer. QualCanvas calculates Cohen's kappa and Krippendorff's alpha on demand for coding attributed to multiple researchers. It is on the Team plan ($39 per seat a month) and Institutions plan, not on Free, Student or Pro. Read-only viewers are free.

What QualCanvas does

What it does not do

It does not decide which agreement method suits your design, and it does not make coders agree. The method walk-through, including when each statistic fits, is in our intercoder reliability chapter. If you only need a number for one study, you can also export your coding and calculate agreement in a statistics package.

Other tools

Several established qualitative packages (NVivo, ATLAS.ti, MAXQDA, Dedoose) include agreement tools of their own. We have not compared their features line by line; confirm in each vendor's documentation for the edition you would buy. See NVivo alternatives compared.

Team setup, shared canvases and seats are described on for research teams.

Which plan includes intercoder reliability?

The Team plan and the Institutions plan. It is not included in Free, Student or Pro (QualCanvas pricing page, checked 3 November 2026).

Does QualCanvas calculate Krippendorff's alpha?

Yes. Team plan users can run Cohen's kappa or Krippendorff's alpha on demand from coding attributed to multiple researchers.

Do viewers need a paid seat?

No. Read-only viewers are free. Each person who codes needs a seat.
