NVivo alternatives for students and researchers
What to compare
Pick by where you work (browser or installed), what you can pay, whether your university already licenses a tool, and whether you need to move a project between tools. NVivo and ATLAS.ti can exchange projects through the REFI-QDA (.qdpx) format, which QualCanvas imports and exports.
Comparison table (checked 3 November 2026)

Which one fits
- Your university or supervisor already uses NVivo, ATLAS.ti or MAXQDA: use that tool. Matching your team matters more than any feature difference. You can still keep a copy through .qdpx export.
- No budget: Taguette or QualCoder cost nothing. See free qualitative coding software for students.
- You want a browser tool with published prices and a visual canvas: QualCanvas Student at $5 a month is the lowest priced paid option in the table above, and the Free plan lets you try it.
- You code in occasional bursts: Dedoose bills by active month and may cost less than a monthly subscription.
- You need very deep query and matrix tools or large audio and video projects: the established desktop packages go further than we do today.
Moving a project
QualCanvas imports REFI-QDA (.qdpx) projects from NVivo or ATLAS.ti and exports .qdpx back. Test with a copy of a small project first and compare the codebook afterwards.
Frequently asked questions
What is the cheapest NVivo alternative?
Taguette and QualCoder are free and open source. Among paid tools in the table, QualCanvas Student is $5 a month with a verified academic email and Dedoose Student is $12.95 per active month (checked 3 November 2026). Several vendors do not show prices on the pages we read.
Can I move my NVivo project into QualCanvas?
QualCanvas imports REFI-QDA .qdpx projects, the exchange format NVivo and ATLAS.ti can export. Try a copy of a small project first and check the codebook.
Is QualCanvas a full replacement for NVivo?
Not for every project. It has fewer query and matrix features than the long-established desktop packages, and its database is hosted in the US with no EU option. It suits interview coding, themes and memos in a browser.
